TRANSROCKIES CHALLENGE Day 1

TransRockies Challenge, now in its fifth edition is a seven-day race across the Continental Divide. It is a 375-mile course that is mostly wilderness trails. It is a two-person, team format that includes primitive camping in between stages.

The TranRockies Challenge 2006 has a new route that covers a large portion of its length. Fernie, BC was home to over 400 riders. They were confronted with an extended version last year’s rough and tumble first stage. The stage, which was similar to last year, was raced in hot, dry conditions. It wound up and down steep, unrelentingly difficult singletrack from the Kootenay. As is the case with multi-day races, Stage One saw a lot of crashes, cramps and flats.

Open Mixed looks as competitive as ever, with many strong teams competing for the purple jerseys. Lynda Wallenfels, an endurance legend, and David Harris, her partner in the sport of endurance earned the right to wear the jerseys first with a finish time at 2:00.
